The Basics of Road Construction
We drive on them every day, but don’t give a thought to how they are made. Road construction is the cornerstone of civil engineering. Whether you’re going on holiday or just around the corner for milk, chances are you will be travelling on a road. Let’s have a look at how roads are made.
The Road Construction Process
You see them all the time, but what is a road? By definition, a road is a route on land between two points. Centuries ago they were used by horses and carts and were simply made of dirt and rock. Modern day roads have been paved (commonly with tar) for our convenience, and now offer a much smoother trip when piloting an automobile or motorcycle. Here are the basic steps needed when constructing a road:
- Planning Phase – The first part when constructing a road is the planning phase. The needs of the transportation medium needs to be evaluated and all the permits need to be in place. The location needs to be identified and what needs to be accomplished, whether a new road or upgrading of an existing one.
- Design Phase – Once the plan is approved, a defined design needs to be created. The design of the road is dependent on the needs it has to fulfil and will require a surveyor’s expertise.
- Construction Phase – This is where the actual physical work comes in. Once the design is approved, the heavy machinery comes in and actually constructs the road: digging, compacting and tarring all form part of the final product.
- Maintenance Phase – Unfortunately roads do not last forever, and the elements result in cracks, degrading of surface, and potholes. Roads need to be maintained so that it’s safe for motorists to reach their destination.
There it is – the main steps needed in road construction. Give it some thought next time you’re cruising from point A to point B.

Civil engineering in the Northern Cape and further afield in South Africa and Africa is on our agenda for the future and we are working towards becoming more than a property development and construction company. However, we would not abandon our construction roots and this is what had made us the company we are today, offering a first-class service in the local marketplace from our humble beginnings in Kimberley, where we are still based.
New Unit Due to Launch
Our civil engineering unit will be launched in terms of our long-term strategy to take our Northern Cape construction company into a new dimension. Advanced plans are afoot to make this new unit a fully-fledged development (and maintenance) unit with ventures into:
- roads
- airports
- bridges
- mining
- electrical
- rail
- township infrastructure
- sporting facilities
- dams
- industrial
- power stations
Never resting on our laurels, work is well underway to develop and establish future strategic joint ventures and partnerships that will bring the required experience and skills to support the proposed growth.
The Future
We are very excited about the prospects of our civil engineering unit and its development and establishment will form part of our 3-phase plan that will aim to take us from the Northern Cape and South Africa into Africa:
- In phase one, which is already completed, we re-invented our company and brand and positioned ourselves as a distinctive entity sound policies and systems.
- The second phase should be over by 2013 and during this time, we will steadily build a profitable and sustainable platform from which future growth will be launched; this includes growing our company equity through a strengthened asset base and through strategic investments and partnerships.
- The last phase, due to be completed by 2015, would serve to establish our pathways into Africa and capture key continental markets.
These strategies should position us perfectly to, in addition to our construction expertise, launch our civil engineering unit from our Northern Cape base.
